Sandra Felzen was born in 1954 in Rio de Janeiro. She began her Science studies in PUC – Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, completing in 1976 her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Back in Rio, Sandra worked in FEEMA – Environmental Protection Agency of the State of Rio de Janeiro. She collaborated in the formulation and enforcement of environmental laws for the quality of watercourses. During this time, she took some art lectures at EAV – Visual Art School in Parque Lage. From 1981 to 1986 she lived in New York where she got a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences at the Polythecnic Institute of New York. At the same time, Sandra studied painting and drawing with Avron Soyer at the New School and Carol Bruns at her studio in Soho.
She returned to Rio in 1986, opened her own studio in the Botanical Garden neighborhood and worked full time as an artist. Sandra took art courses with Anna Bella Geiger and Katie Van Scharpenberg, among other Brazilian artists and print making with Armando Mattos. From 1993 to 1996 she resided in Chicago and from then on she has lived in Rio de Janeiro. The confluence of science and art has been determinant in her artistic career. Sandra Felzen has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad from 1985 on.
